The game of Electronic Poker begins when the enthusiast puts credits (whether it’s tokens, credit slips or cash) into the video poker machine and pushes the play button. A hand of five cards will then be electronically ‘dealt’ on the video screen.

The Video Poker machine also has hold buttons, and bettors will need to now choose which cards to hold and which to throw away. For the cards the player wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons need to be pressed so that they light up. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they want, from all to none.

After the bettor has chosen which cards he or she would like to keep, the player will then press ‘deal’, at which point any fresh cards are given out if desired. The round is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.

Normally, the minimum succeeding hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money getting larger for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to two pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It is obvious that the payment schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that experienced enthusiasts are agile enough to select the most money-making ones each time.

Once the first round has completed, the player can either choose to stay on in an attempt to maximize their winnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any cash that might have been won. Additionally, some versions of the game allow the enthusiast an opportunity to double their wins, in which instance another hand is played. There are also differences among specific machines, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other differing characteristics to enhance playability.
